Google plans to take on Mexican drug cartels
The tech giant’s slogan might well be «Don’t Be Evil», but lately Google has been more proactive in applying its technological clout and anti-evil principles to areas outside of its core commercial interests. In April 2012, Google Ideas launched the Against Violent Extremism  site, which is trying to generate positive discussions between former terrorists and their victims.

Όλα καλά όταν βρίσκεσαι σε κάποιο νησί: Περπατάς στα σοκάκια του (αν έχει), κολυμπάς στα βαθιά, χαζεύεις τη θέα της απέραντης θάλασσας. Τι γίνεται όμως όταν το κοιτάς από ψηλά; Φανταζόσουν ότι μπορεί να βρίσκεσαι στην «καρδιά» ενός… δελφινιού;

Khadafi’s wife, Safiya, daughter Aisha and two of his sons, Mohammed and Hannibal, all crossed into Algeria.

The spouses of Khadafi’s children and their children arrived as well. This post gives us a glimpse of how those family members lived while in power in Libya. The value of these images isn’t in their artistry or aesthetic, but in their storytelling information as we seek to uncover more behind the scenes of the Khadafi regime that spanned forty-two years

When Atlantis touched down at Cape Canaveral, Fla., the high-flying era of the space shuttles came down to earth as well. After 30 years, the shuttle program, which began on April 12, 1981 with Colombia, has ended with the 135th mission. Atlantis delivered the Raffaello multi-purpose logistics module packed with supplies and spare parts to the International Space Station, and retrieved a failed pump unit and other items for the return trip. Atlantis went aloft 33 times, logging over 125 million miles. The last shuttle will become a museum exhibit at the Kennedy Space Center.

Over the last decade, Greece went on a debt binge that came crashing to an end in late 2009, provoking an economic crisis. Over the next two years, Greece relied on bailout money from its richer neighbors and implemented austerity measures meant to cut its bloated deficit and restore investor confidence. But by June 2011 it found itself deep in a second recession, near the end of its cash and facing a political crisis, as anti-austerity demonstrations grew. Violence broke out this week during one of those demonstrations, injuring 11, as the frustration continued to grow and no quick fixes emerged. Today, Greece’s Prime Minister George Papandreou, in a broad cabinet reshuffle, appointed a new Finance Minister, Evangelos Venizelos, in hopes of turning his country around.

On May 26, 2011, notorious war fugitive Ratko Mladic was arrested in a village in northern Serbia. He will face genocide charges in The Hague. The arrest is a reminder of the atrocities that occurred during the Balkan conflict

The Sun is now in the quietest phase of its 11-year activity cycle, the solar minimum – in fact, it has been unusually quiet this year – with over 200 days so far with no observed sunspots. The solar wind has also dropped to its lowest levels in 50 years. Scientists are unsure of the significance of this unusual calm, but are continually monitoring our closest star with an array of telescopes and satellites. Seen below are some recent images of the Sun in more active times.
